Know Your Value

Apr 09, 2018

Tiffany O'Donnell is the CEO of Iowa Women Lead Change, a statewide nonpartisan 501(c)(3) dedicated to the advancement, development, and promotion of women, their organizations and to impacting the greater economy.

It’s just that simple. Or is it?
By now, you’ve heard the annoying statistic that “men will apply for a
job with half the qualifications, and a woman wants to have all before
she’ll apply.” Granted, it’s my business, but I’m over it. Enough.

Fellow professionals, we know there are the “unwoke” out there who
continue to ignore unconscious or even conscious bias when it comes to
fairly hiring and PAYING women. These are the people who may never
be “on the bus,” as I say.

Let’s leave them by the curb.

Instead, let’s make sure we take control of things we CAN control. Let’s
be informed about our worth and value in the marketplace. In 2018, we
have this power at our fingertips. If your network of professionals
doesn’t have this information, the web does.

Today, you can plug in a job, a market, compare other similar jobs and
offers and determine your own personal salary goal (see resources
below). Do your homework. Is it easy? Well, it’s not hard, but it does
take time and a critical look.

If you don’t?

It could cost you over $1 million in the span of your professional career;
it’s hard to make up lost ground. Salary rates often build on each other.
(http://www.businessinsider.com/not-negotiating- costs-workers- 1-
million-2013). Last time I checked, that’s real money.

Arm yourself with the power of knowing your worth. Then, ask for it.
Simple? No. But it gets easier every time.
