Iowa Women Lead Change (IWLC) Chief Executive Officer Diane Ramsey tonight released the following statement regarding the political elections in Iowa:

“It is with heartfelt enthusiasm tonight that we celebrate the election of Iowa’s first woman to the United States Senate. No matter what side of the aisle you are on, there is no denying that it was past time for our state to elect its first woman to Congress.

“As our friends at the non-partisan organization 50/50 in 2020 have noted, Iowa has never elected a female governor nor sent a woman to Washington D.C. as United States Senator or United States Representative. Until today’s election, Iowa shared this distinction with one other state: Mississippi.

“The election of former Iowa State Senator Joni Ernst – as well as the federal campaigns of Mariannette Miller-Meeks in District 2 and Staci Appel in District 3 and the Governor’s race featuring Lieutenant Governor candidates Kim Reynolds and Monica Vernon – show that efforts from groups like 50/50 in 2020 and the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University are raising the consciousness of the importance of women in community leadership, politics and public service.

“IWLC is hopeful that this election will serve as a watershed moment for women in politics in Iowa, opening the floodgates for future women leaders and legislators.”

IWLC is the state’s premier leadership organization for women, offering comprehensive leadership resources including events featuring prominent speakers, frequent networking opportunities, and other important services to advance women’s leadership in all aspects of their lives. Since 2007, IWLC – originally known as the Iowa Women’s Leadership Conference – has staged events attracting more than 10,000 women and men from across the Midwest. IWLC is an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization and welcomes inquiries from grant makers, individual contributors, and other funding partners who share its passion for women’s leadership.
